Houston marathon runner turns grief into action
Miles 4 Matthew Featured on ABC 13
During Marathon Week (January 13th–19th, 2025), ABC 13 shared the heartfelt story behind Miles 4 Matthew, highlighting how this mission came to life after Matthew’s courageous fight against cancer. The segment featured Nyria Gallardo, Matthew’s mom and co-founder of Miles 4 Matthew, as she shared her journey of turning grief into action—building a community that supports families facing the financial and emotional burden of pediatric cancer.
Running was always a part of Matthew’s story. When Nyria was expecting her first son, she completed the Aramco Houston Half Marathon at 36 weeks pregnant. After he was born, Matthew often joined her on runs and eventually started doing 5Ks himself.
"He was always active, very energetic, loving, and caring," Gallardo shared.
At just 4 years old, Matthew was diagnosed with leukemia. He was a fighter, bravely overcoming the disease in the first round, but his cancer would return. In May 2023, at the age of 9, Matthew tragically lost his battle.
"If he never gave up, why would I?" Gallardo said, a sentiment that fuels Miles 4 Matthew’s mission to honor his legacy and support families facing similar battles.
We are deeply grateful to ABC 13 for sharing Matthew’s story and shining a light on our cause. If you missed the segment, you can watch it by clicking in read more.
